The Federal Writers’ Project was part of the Work Progress Administration’s effort to create jobs during the Great Depression, as part of Roosevelt’s New Deal. Historians, teachers, writers, librarians, photographers, and more were tasked with creating titles for the American Guide Series – publications focusing on the history and culture of various parts of the United States.
